Bayelsa govt confirms arrest of police corporal, others over alleged kidnapping

THE Bayelsa State Government yesterday confirmed the arrest of a police corporal attached to the State Police Command and seven others over their involvement in the alleged kidnapping of 90-year-old Florentina Paulker, mother of the senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Emmanuel Paulker.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Col. Bernard Kenebai, said the police corporal was arrested 20 minutes after Mrs. Paulker was abducted.

Kenebai, who described the recent cases of kidnapping as sad and unfortunate, said though it has been uncovered that the kidnap incidents were part of a conspiracy by some persons to frustrate the investment drive of the state government, the ability of the state security apparatus to respond swiftly to reported incidents and rescue the victims showed that the present administration is poised to sustain the existing peace in the state.

The aide, who also confirmed the involvement of some ex-militant leaders in the rescue operation of the abducted senator’s mother, said the state government is ready to work with individuals and groups in the areas of intelligence gathering to check incidents of violent crimes.

Meanwhile, the National Co-ordinator of the South-South Region Peace Advocacy Group, the Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative (LPCDI), General Pastor Reuben Wilson, said the efforts of the ex-freedom fighters and the state security agencies, including the police in the area of intelligent gathering, led to the abductors abandoning the woman at a fishing camp in Azuzuama community of Southern Ijaw Local Council of the state.

Wilson commended the state government and the security agencies in the state for giving them the opportunity to serve and assist in the rescue operation of the octogenarian.
