Bayelsa Education Lacks Supervision, Says Speaker

Speaker  of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, in Southern Nigeria, Konbowei Friday Benson, has lashed out at the state’s educational system, saying it lacks supervision.
Bayelsa is the home state of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan.

While expressing concern on the lack of supervision in the state educational system, the obviously enraged speaker called for a fundamental overhaul of the system, in line with the restoration agenda of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson.

On assumption of office, the governor declared a state of emergency in the education sector.
Benson was however, speaking when the state Commissioner for Education, Salo Adikumo, Permanent Secretary and members of the Senior Secondary Schools Board, Executive Secretary and members of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), along with all senior special assistants and special advisers to the governor on education appeared for questioning on the floor of the House on Wednesday.

While lamenting the poor performance of the some of the officials, the speaker pointed out that there was something fundamentally wrong with the schools’ evaluation system in the state. He advised the relevant authorities to perform or risk been sacked.

The drilling of key officials in the educational sector in the state continues on Thursday. AkanimoReports gathered that the exercise is in relation to an alleged lopsided postings of teachers at the post primary level.

Documents submitted to the lawmakers tend to indicate that some secondary schools in the rural communities with over 150 students, had only two or three teachers, whereas schools in the state capital and environs have so many teachers.
