Gunmen Kidnap 78-Year-Old Mother Of Bayelsa Commissioner

The fold of the Political Office holders in Bayelsa State was weekend again thrown into confusion following the kidnap of the 78 years old Mother of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey,Surveyor Furuebi Akene in the Fonibiri Community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the State.

The kidnap of the Mother of the Bayelsa Commissioner for Lands and Survey is coming a forthnight after the abduction of the 90 years old Mother-In-Law of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly,Hon.Kombowei Benson.Her whereabouts has since remain unknown.

The abducted mother of the Commissioner,identified as Madam Patimi Akeme,was whisked away by armed men numbering about six at her home close to the waterside of the Community at about 12 am on Saturday.

According to the Son of the victim and Commissioner for Kands and Survey,Surveyor Furuebi Akene,who confirmed the abduction,said the Octonegerian was abducted by the gunmen without firing a gun shot.

Furuebi Akene,who expressed concern over the incident,said “my mother was in company of one of her grand daughters when the armed men arrived at about 12 am and taken towards Southern direction of the ocean”.

According to Akene,the screen of her mother for help was cut short by the gunmen with a threat to kill her and her grand daughter,”preliminary investigation from the movement of the gunmen showed that they know her and have been studying her.They decided to take her quietly to avoid alarm.”

Surveyor Furuebi Akene however confirmed that the armed men had made contact with him on Sunday evening and demanded for his resignation from the cabinet of Governor Seriake Dickson as Commissioner.

Akene said “Someone that I suspected to be one of the kidnappers called me and said they don’t need my money.But that I should “withdraw” from the present administration as commissioner.I think what they are demanding is for me to resign my appointment.” “My brother,I think the people interested in my job as commissioner in the state are the ones behind the abduction of my mother.”

Contacted on the development,the spokesman for the State Police Command,Mr.Alex Akhigbe,confirmed the incident and said they have mobilized policemen to comb the waterways and creeks of the state.

According to him,”the terrain is very difficult but we are working hard with a view to identifying the location of the victim and rescue her.”
