‘No student killed in Bayelsa cult clash’

Police in Bayelsa State yesterday debunked media report that three students were killed during a clash between rival cult groups.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Alex Akhigbe, said in a statement that the report in a national newspaper that three students were killed in Bayelsa State cult clash on July 1 was not true.

He said that the cult clash between AY and Vages cult groups happened outside Niger Delta University (NDU) campus and not inside examination hall. Akhigbe noted that one of the cult members sustained machete cuts on his forehead, while a 100 level student had his palm severed. He said no life was lost in the clash. According to him, the publication is misguided, unfounded and lacked merit.

He said: “It was a calculated attempt to cause apprehension and incite the students against the school authorities and the government of Bayelsa State.”

Akhigbe, therefore, urged the public to disregard the publication, noting that the security agencies were working tenaciously to sustain the existing peace and security in the state.
